Over/Under- Ryan Howard

Over the next month or so, WSBGMs will be previewing most of the players expected to be on the Phillies 25-man roster, either as individuals (ex- starting position players) or as groups (ex- bullpen and bench).  Today subject is our lumbering first baseman, Ryan Howard.

Pros: Has natural power, drives in runs, and hits right-handed pitching well.

Cons: Makes $25M a season, oft-injured, can't hit lefties, horrible defensively, clogs the bases.

WSBGM 2014 Projections for Ryan Howard:
131 G, .249/.784, 66 R, 25 DBL, 23 HR, 84 RBI.

Phillies sign old "friend" Brian Bixler to minor league deal. Yeah.

I think Ryno can get back to .260, 30 HR, 100 RBIs with a somewhat healthy season. He was easily on pace last season before injury.

I feel he has 35+ hr season in him, but plate appearances will be a bit less as I foresee Sandberg having Ruf start at times. If Ruf plays against leftys look for the BA be a good bit higher.

Sounds about right overall. I am not going to assume he will be rested against lefties. Maybe a little more power and a little less BA.

I'd love to see Howard sit against lefties, but I highly doubt that will be the routine. The stats I posted are respectable, just nowhere close to being $25M worthy.

Why the hell did the Phillies originally sign Miguel Gonzalez to a $48M contract then turn it into a $12M contract if they seemingly know nothing about him. Reading all of Amaro's comments on him are maddening. He speaks like he's never even seen him throw a pitch. Why the hell would they sign him then?

He has a cool name - that's why

Would you rather have A) Roberto Hernandez on a 1 YR/$4.5M deal, B) Paul Maholm 1 YR/$1.5M, or C) Tommy Hanson on a minor league deal?

I vote B or C. B is pretty consistent, C is cheaper with much more upside. A sucks, and that's who Amaro signed. Amaro is an idiot!
